Spring is finally here! Welcome to the month of May, named for Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility!
Maia was known for her beauty. And she, like other ancient Greek women, used cosmetics. Unlike many present-day women who unknowingly use cosmetics full of untested and unhealthy chemicals, the ancient Greek women (and goddesses) used natural ingredients including olive oil, honey, lanolin, tallow, a charcoal and lovely earth colors for pigments.
While today’s busy and hectic lifestyles might not allow women the time to mix Redding with beeswax and olive oil to make lipstick, we still have the right to healthy, natural and safe personal care products. After all, May is the month of fertility- it’s the month when we consciously set aside a day to celebrate mothers, and the reproductive health of our families and nature. Take this month to honor your inner goddess and take personal action. We suggest the following:
-
Write or call cosmetics companies and ask them to commit to removing reproductive toxins from personal care products:
Estee Lauder »
OPI »
-
Use the Environmental Working Group’s online
Skin Deep database, where you can research your current products to compare their safety against similar products, learn about chemicals commonly found in personal care products, and find safer options.
-
Refer to our
list of cosmetics manufacturers that have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. These companies recognize that chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, infertility and other health problems have no business in personal care products.
-
Have fun
making your own personal care products, just like the ancient Greeks, only in your kitchen, with modern plumbing and a refrigerator.
