Spring Cleaning

Let’s exfoliate those winter doldrums and welcome a healthy new spring for your skin, body and environment!

We’re talking serious scrubbing: dumping all those old, toxic cosmetics lurking in your medicine cabinet. You know what we’re talking about: the little (ridiculously expensive) face cream pot you’re hanging on to even though there’s not even enough left to moisturize your chin, the bottle of sunscreen from 1999, the crusty bottle of separating nail polish you bought before that trip to Mexico four years ago...

Yep, it’s time to say a guilt-free ciao to them all, and to the bottles in the shower and on your nightstand, too. They’re past their prime, and likely full of untested chemicals. In fact, some products (like nail polish) are safer now than they were just a few years ago, thanks to new European laws, increased awareness of nasty chemicals in cosmetics and the efforts of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and our stellar supporters.

The best part of this Spring Cleaning is that you now have the perfect reason to spend some time investing in safer, healthier products. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has two tools for your search:

  1. The Environmental Working Group’s online Skin Deep database, where you can research your current products to compare their safety against similar products, learn about chemicals commonly found in personal care products and find safer options.

  2. Our list of cosmetics manufacturers that have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. These companies recognize that chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, infertility and other health problems have no business in personal care products. They’ve all agreed to eliminate unsafe chemicals from their product lines.

Before you know it, you’ll be sporting a fresh, healthy new glow. Welcome, spring!

If you had a great time cleaning your own cosmetics cache, think how much more fun you can have with friends! Host a Healthy Cosmetics Spa Party, where you can toss the toxic products, learn about safe alternatives to buy and even make your own healthy cosmetics.
